Introduction: The process by which a federal bill becomes a law is convoluted as the bill may move backwards, sideways, or get sidetracked along the way to becoming a federal law. The process can perhaps best be represented by a flow chart rather than a set of linear steps but, in general ideas for laws can come from many sources such as citizens, interest groups, or public officials. At some point a Representative or Senator must agree to sponsor the bill. A bill can be introduced in either the House or the Senate. At the legislator’s direction, the idea is drafted as a bill.”
